How to create and use Templates in ProTools for Windows?

Create:

Create a new session in Pro Tools. Set it up the way you want your template to be, including tracks, tempo, and any plugins. Save and close the session. In windows Explorer, find the session, right click it, select “Properties” and then click the check box next to “Read-Only”. Now your template is complete and cannot be written over.

Usage:

When you want to use your template, create a new session. Then select “Import=>Session Data” from the file menu. On the Import dialog, you will have the opportunity to select which parts of the template to import, including full tracks, tempo, markers. You can even select which parts of the track to import (or which parts to exclude, such as audio data).Using this method has certain advantages;

  • you never actually open the template so there is no possibility of mistakenly overwriting it
  • you don’t have to worry what the disk allocation of the template is
  • if you have the DV Toolkit 2, you can import settings from other sessions without importing the actual audio
