Aux tracks can be used to submix other tracks in Pro Tools. For instance, submixing an entire drumkit to a stereo aux track to control the volume of the entire kit.
Here is an example of the technique using 7 drum tracks; kick drum, snare drum, hi-hats, rack tom, floor tom, stereo overheads, and stereo room mics.
- Select the tracks you want to submix
- Create a group for the tracks and keep it active
- Press shift + alt and select an available bus for the output of one of the grouped tracks. Since the tracks are grouped, shift + alt selecting assigns all of the outputs in the group to the same selection
- Rename the bus to be something recognizable, like “drumSubmix”
- Create a stereo AUX track
- Name it Drum Sub (or whatever you like)
- Select the “drumSubmix” bus as the AUX track’s input
That’s it! Now you can control the overall volume level of the entire kit with one fader. Don’t forget, the tracks are grouped, so if you need to make adjustments to the individual kit piece tracks to turn off the group. This same procedure can be used for any groups of tracks that need to be submixed; guitars, BGV, synths, etc.
