Just got this and haven’t had much time to play with it, but was amazed at it from even the little time I spent with it. Worth it! Get it!
(the Windows version appears to be VST only, so you will need the FXPansion VST-RTAS wrapper if on Windows.)
Very much like the IKMultimedia Sampletank Free, the Kontakt Player is a free plugin that allows you to load samples in multiple formats. It comes with a basic sound library, but you can purchase sound expansion sets, and even find some free samples to load and play. This is one of the only sample players to load and play SoundFont samples, so this is worth grabbing just for that.
Many “Kontakt” samples that you might find for purchase require the full blown version of Kontakt (a plugin that I do recommend) to be played, so that is something to consider, but this will work as a free plugin very well.
From the website:
“A free software instrument with an inspiring 1GB sample library and 200 instrument sounds including evolving soundscapes, lush pads, and pulsing arpeggios. 150 sounds are included with 50 more when you sign up for a free account.”
Decent plugin (awesome for free!) and it will load SFZ sample libraries.
OK, this one is a “no-brainer”. The newest version of Sampletank Free (2.5) is a “full-featured” version of Sampletank. It comes with 500MB of samples for free (don’t forget to download them; they’re separate), but unlike previous versions, can also be expanded just by purchasing the sample sets available from the “Powered by SampleTank” range and any of the “Expansion Tank 2″ sound sets, as well as importing your own WAV, AIFF, SDII, AKAI S-1000/3000, and Samplecell files.
It has all of the features of the full fledged product, just not the sample sets (which can be purchased at a later time if you wish).
Again, for free? A no-brainer must-have. Seriously.
Drumcore Free is a “light” version of the full Drumcore product. It can be used as a “groove player” or as a triggered drum sampler. It includes only 2 drumkits (rock/pop and hip-hop), and is definitely a “tease” of the full product as it cannot be expanded or added to without puchase, but is still fairly useful.
To download this freebie, you must register for a user account at www.fxpansion.com, then once logged in, go to Support->Account, and it should be available there for you to download (as well as their freebie synth, Orca).
A one trick pony, and kind of silly, but it may be useful in some instances, and heck; IT’S FREE!
This is now included in all new versions of Pro Tools.
From the webpage:
“If you’re looking to get a taste of what the world of Structure™, the future of professional sampling, has to offer, Structure™ Free offers a great introduction without paying a price — literally (it’s free!). Developed by the acclaimed Digidesign® Advanced Instrument Research (A.I.R.) group, Structure Free is a free sample player for Pro Tools® that provides some of the key features of its big brother, Structure, allowing you to quickly and easily integrate a wide range of sounds into your Pro Tools sessions and tweak them to make them your own.”
This is a no brainer.
